Meet Justin Winkel, a self-taught multidisciplinary artist and founder of Winkel Gallery. His work, marked by expressive color and texture, offers a powerful response to grief and healing, drawing inspiration from nature’s raw beauty. Known for his prolific exploration of painting, sculpture, and photography, Justin pushes the boundaries of abstraction through layered textures and bold gestures. His pieces celebrate the duality of preservation—of both nature and self—reflecting a profound connection to the environment. Each work in his diverse practice carries a tactile, layered quality, embodying his commitment to capturing nature’s resilience and emotional depth.

Artist Statement

My journey as a self-taught artist began during a difficult period in my life. Painting became a way to express the emotions I was processing, particularly the grief from losing my father and grandmother within months of each other. Art gave me a renewed sense of purpose and connection. In 2015, two years into my practice, I took a leap and opened my own studio, committing fully to a career as a professional artist.

My work is deeply inspired by nature and the profound changes occurring on our planet. Nature is raw, unapologetic, and constantly evolving—a quality I strive to reflect in my art. Guided by my experiences, I channel this inspiration to create pieces that resonate with the unfiltered power and resilience found in the natural world.
